Cirrhosis and related Liver Diseases

Disease of the liver caused by chronic damage to its cells. Internal scarring of liver tissue damaging the normal structure of the liver. The liver is unable to remove toxins from the blood. Alcohol is normally the cause of Cirrhosis of the liver. Hepatitis (inflammation of the liver) can lead to cirrhosis.

Monitoring Body Composition

Body composition changes decreasing Body Fat and BCM with severity of cirrhosis. Depletion of BCM can go un-notice due to abnormal fluid retention (i.e., ascites), which is common in cirrhosis patients. In this group the TBW/FFM was found to increase with the severity of disease, while the protein decreased. Not only is Body fat lower, this group was found to have less Body Cell Mass and Body Mineral Density.
