Importance of measuring body composition

Knowledge of body composition is important to nutritionalists, physiologists and medics, who commonly divide the body into major components, which includes fat and fat-free mass. Body fat is that fat which may be chemically extracted and defined, this represents mostly the energy stores of the body, but some fat is of course associated with the structure and function of cells. Fat free mass remains when fat is removed, and this consists of water, protein and mineral which represents the organs (e.g. muscle) and fluids etc.

N.B. Some Chemically defined fat is associated with the fat-free tissues (e.g. 2-3% is found as an integrated
part of muscle tissue), and some fat-free mass is associated with fat (about 20% of adipose tissue comprises water and protein).

People of different weights have different amounts of fat and fat free mass, therefore for those interested in body composition to know the right proportion of fat to lean ratio is very important. A very high or indeed very low percentage of fat may be associated with increased risk of certain diseases (e.g. cardiovascular disease or diabetes etc).

How does Maltron BF-906 work?

Bio-electrical impedance at 50kHz works by measuring the impedance (resistance plus reactance - at this frequency the current passes across cell membranes) of the body to a safe alternating current.
